Home Mosquito Invitations

Oct 6, 2023 | Blog

As summer approaches, so do the dreaded mosquitoes. Are these pesky insects a yearly nuisance for you? You might not be aware of the factors that draw mosquitoes to your home. To ensure a mosquito-free home, it’s crucial not to unknowingly invite them in.

So, what are some open Mosquito Invitations:

Standing Water in Your Yard

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water. Any puddles or rain-collecting containers in your yard can become breeding grounds. Regularly empty, clean, or cover these sources to eliminate this open invitation.

Pet Water Bowls

Even the smallest amount of standing water in your pet’s water bowl can attract mosquitoes. Make sure to change your pet’s water daily to prevent mosquito breeding.

Certain Types of Cheese!

Carboxylic acids found in “stinky” cheeses such as Limburger, have long been known to attract mosquitoes. People also produce these acids naturally in varying levels but cannot smell them on their skin.

Open Trash Cans

Trash cans that aren’t sealed properly can emit odours that attract mosquitoes. Keep your trash cans tightly closed, and consider using cans with lids.

Dirty Birdbaths

While birdbaths are lovely for our feathered friends, they can become mosquito breeding grounds if not cleaned regularly. Change the water and scrub the birdbath frequently to repel mosquitoes.

Lotions, Perfumes and Colognes

Mosquitoes are drawn to scents, including those from lotions, perfumes, and colognes. Additionally, your body odour can attract them. Consider using unscented products, especially when spending time outdoors.

Plant Saucers and overwatered Plants

Plant saucers can collect water, providing a prime spot for mosquito larvae. Ensure that excess water drains away, and avoid overwatering your plants.

Yard Debris

Leaves, grass clippings, and other yard debris can collect moisture, creating ideal mosquito breeding sites. Regularly clean up your yard to limit these opportunities.

Unclean Gutters and Clogged Drains

Clogged gutters and drains can trap water and debris, making them perfect spots for mosquito breeding. Keep your gutters and drains clean and free-flowing.

Dark Colours

Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours, as they tend to absorb more heat.
